Things to consider, measuring for bay windows and measuring instructions

Are there any obstructions that will hinder the operation or fitting of the headrails, is the fixing area clear no ridges of PVC i.e. a flat fixing surface, if not do you need to make allowances or consider how you get your fixings, do you need to make allowances for dado rails, phone sockets ect. Anything that will hinder, or stop the blind from working properly?

Guide for Angled bay windows

The first thing you need to decide after choosing the type of Blind you are going to fit in your bay window is how you are going to mount them. If you have handles then you will have to top fix them from the ceiling, if you do not have that option then you may have to mount some wooden battening the depth of your handles above the window frame, as the Blinds must be free of the handles so you can raise, lower and open the blinds free from obstruction from the window handles.

Some of our blinds have the option of face fixing and still give handle clearance of up to 45mm listed below.

Blinds that can be provided with face fix extension brackets

1. Roller Blinds standard bracket but (Reverse roll) fabric rolls from the front of the barrel.
   See Fig 7 & 8
2. Vertical Blinds 89mm louvers only on a SF 5'' face fix bracket.
3. Venetian blinds on a face fix extension bracket.
4. Venetian Wood effect on a face fix extension bracket.

We have provided below all the blind headrail width dimensions for either face fix or top fix applications.

Best carried out with some stiff cardboard work out your blind headrail width, cut two pieces of cardboard to 15cm in length and your required headrail width our example is for 35mm slated Wooden Venetian blind see Fig (4) handles are 4cm in depth and the headrail is 4.6cm so our card is cut to 15cm in length by 8.6cm width.

Place the two pieces of card into the apex of the window frame at the top where the blind headrail will sit, move them together until the two corners meet mark on the inside edge where shown with a pencil see Fig (4) repeat this for each angle.

Now the ends as shown in Fig(3) (NB the following will be down to how you decide to fit your blinds along with brackets used) if you are face fixing off the window frame and there are no handles and the type of blind chosen can not be provided with face fix extension brackets see list provided above 1 - 4 then the blind will fit tight to the corner where the frame meets the wall.

If you are top fixing or using the option of extension face fixing brackets Roller, Vertical 89mm louvers , Aluminium Venetian, Woodeffect Venetian that provides extended face fixings you could possibly make the two side blinds a little wider to close down the gap at the ends, this would be determined by the angle of the brickwork and the depth of your handles, give some consideration to how you get a fixing and be sure the blind will not touch the wall. Note you will need to top fix if you use this option with a Roller Blind as the brackets are attached at the ends of the blind.

You now have all the blind widths see Fig (4) marked on the frame measure A-B, C-D, E-F. Deduct 1cm from all the widths.

Now the drop measure left to right in three places from where the blind headrail will sit down to the window sill in three places make a note of the smallest drop this will be the measurement you will use when you place your order.

You need to select (Exact) Blind Size.

This will indicate to us that you wish your blind to be made to your exact dimensions and that you have allowed for clearance of 1cm between the blinds, provide all drops as the smallest noted, all blinds with the exception of Verticals will be supplied to your exact drop given, in all cases we will deduct 1cm from all Vertical drops given if ordered as recess or exact to give window sill or floor rotation clearance.

• Sizes provided by the customer are your own responsibility, refunds or replacement blinds free of charge will not be possible if you miss measure.
• Dependant on the size of your window frame work, you may find that in the corners of the bay by the time you have allowed for handles and the blind headrail there may be a small amount of glass showing when the blind is in the closed position, when measuring look down the window from your marks on the ceiling to see if the position of the blinds will give you total glass coverage, in some cases it may have to be a compromise.
• If you are unsure on any of these instructions then we suggest you order and fit the main blind first then order the side blinds to fill in the gaps to the sides, if you do decide on this option we can not guarantee the blinds will have a total match in colour or that slats will line up.
