Box Bay Window Measuring Guide
For measuring windows for specific blinds types please go to our How to Measure section.
Things to consider, measuring for bay windows and measuring instructions. Please note these instructions are for top fixing in all cases.
Are there any obstructions that will hinder the operation or fitting of the headrails, is the fixing area clear no ridges of PVC i.e. a flat fixing surface, if not do you need to make allowances or consider how you get your fixings, do you need to make allowances for dado rails, phone sockets ect. anything that will hinder or stop the blind from working properly?.
Box Bay Windows
-
Measure the front window first (width) top, middle, bottom make a note of the smallest measurement then deduct 1cm from the measurement to give you clearance this will be the size when you order your blinds.
(Exact) Blind Size
Now the drop, measure all round the bay, find the smallest drop measurement from your fixing point make a note. - Now the sides, if you have handles then the front blind and the side blinds should sit just in front of the window handles see Fig (1) birds eye view.
- Dependant on the type of blind you are measuring for, see below we have provided all the different blind headrail sizes so you can calculate for the clearance required including your handles
- So for this example let's say we are fitting Wooden Venetians with 35mm slats, headrail is 46mm and our handles are 40mm so we need to measure 86mm from the window frame in both the corners put a mark on the ceiling, this is the position the front face of the blind headrail will sit.
- Now from that mark measure to the side recess, left side and right side make a note, now you have the width of the side blinds deduct 1cm from both measurements to allow for clearance this will be the size you use when ordering your blinds. When you enter your measurements on the website you need to select (Exact) Blind Size this tells us that you require your blinds made to your exact sizes given and that you have made allowances for clearance of 1cm on all three blinds.
For Open Bay Windows
- Measure the front window first (width) top, middle, bottom make a note of the smallest measurement then deduct 1cm from the measurement to give you clearance this will be the size when you order your blinds.
- Now the drop, measure all round the bay find the smallest drop measurement from your fixing point make a note.
- Now the sides, if you have handles then the front blind and the side blinds should sit just in front of the window handles see Fig (2) birds eye view.
- Dependant on the type of blind you are measuring for, see below we have provided all the different blind headrail sizes so you can calculate for the clearance required including your handles.
- So for this example let's say we are fitting Wooden Venetians with 35mm slats, headrail is 46mm and our handles are 40mm, so we need to measure 86mm from the window frame in both the corners put a mark on the ceiling, this is the position the front face of the blind headrail will sit.
- With an open bay window to the sides as in Fig (2) birds eye view, you need to decide where you would like the side blinds to end, either to the edge of the window frame or it may be worth considering making the side blinds 20cm or so wider to give better window coverage, as when the blind is in the closed position from a certain angle you may still be able to see some of the glass behind the blind, as don't forget the blinds will stand off the window to allow for handles and the headrail. Give some consideration to your fixing points is it still possible to get a fixing if you make the side blinds wider?
- Now from that mark measure to the side recess, left side and right side make a note, now you have the width of the side blinds.
- This will be the size you use when ordering your blinds. When you enter your measurements on the website you need to select (Exact) Blind Size this tells us that you require your blinds made to your exact sizes given and that you have made allowances for clearance of 1cm on the front blind only.
- Please note this information is for your guidance only, it is how our trained fitters measure for bay windows, however we can not be held responsible and do not accept responsibility for errors and possible oversight on your part when you measure and supply us with your dimensions.
- Sizes provided by the customer are your own responsibility, refunds or replacement blinds free of charge will not be possible if you miss measure.
- Dependant on the size of your window frame work, you may find that in the corners of the bay by the time you have allowed for handles and the blind headrail there may be a small amount of glass showing when the blind is in the closed position, when measuring look down the window from your marks on the ceiling to see if the position of the blinds will give you total glass coverage, in some cases it may have to be a compromise.
- If you are unsure on any of these instructions then we suggest you order and fit the main blind first then order the side blinds to fill in the gaps to the sides, if you do decide on this option we can not guarantee the blinds will have a total match in colour or that slats will line up.
