Made to Measure Blinds

Frequently Asked Questions

We have listed below some of the most popular questions we are asked. Please browse through, if your question is not here please contact us at: info@madetomeasureblinds-uk.com and we will try to help you.

Q.)What size Vertical louvre would you recommend for a Patio Door 236x205 cm?

A.)There is no set rule to this the main advantage with 5" is a smaller stack when drawn back, as there will be less louvres however you loose more space within the reveal. 31/2" will be a larger stack but more space within the reveal personally I prefer the look of 31/2".

Q.)Control options, do you take control side as facing the window or with your back to the window?

A.)This answer relates to all types of our Blinds, select your control side options as you face the window.

Q.)I want to fit a "roller" blind to a door which opens close to a wall. Could you please advise how far the bracket/blind will protrude from the door when rolled up. The approximate dimensions for the blind are 62 cm Wide x 110 cm drop.

A.)The blind will stand off by 5cm keep width to a minimum but still give glass coverage; you loose 2.8 of fabric from width when the blind is manufactured to allow for brackets. 20mm Control side and 8mm pin side.

Q.)Roman Blinds on a sash window how do I measure and fit.

A.)Please see image. X1 will be bracket positions, X2 marks the corner of your blind, you have plenty of space for the brackets, if you have a look on the Roman page you can see the brackets, Measure from the corner down to the window Sill for drop in three places note the smallest drop, and from corner to corner at the top for width X2, order as exact, so blind will be framed by the decorative frame. Easy to fit just screw into the wood frame with the wood screws we supply.

Q.)Is it possible to turn and or join your Roller Blind fabrics, to give a longer drop for my blind?

A.)Yes some of our fabrics can be turned we have provided this information with each of the fabrics when you select them from within the Roller Blind colour library. Currently Acacia and Christy FR are the only fabrics that we can provide a horizontal join, that could give a maximum width of 300 and a drop of 300 please email us if you require you’re blind to be turned or joined. info@madetomeasureblinds-uk.com

Q.)How do you measure for Angled Bay Windows?

A.)Please follow link how to measure page

Q.)How do you measure for Conservatory Blinds?

A.)Please follow link how to measure page

Q.)How do you measure and fit Blinds for a box bay window?

A.)Please follow link for all Blind types

Q.)My roller Blind width is 115.5cm (Exact) BLIND SIZE will you make the roller blind to that width including the brackets?

A.)Yes Blinds that have the fixings brackets at the ends are manufactured to the width provided including the brackets, i.e. Rollers and Wooden Venetians have end fixings. So in this case (Exact) BLIND SIZE your finished blind width will be 115.5cm with the brackets attached, if you had selected (Recess) INSIDE MOUNT the blind width would be 114.5cm with the brackets attached, we deduct 1cm if ordered as (Recess) to allow for clearance for the blind to fit within the recess and function properly when raised and lowered.

Q.)I have a window that is half tiled which width measurement do I take?

A.)If it is a Roller Blind you are ordering and the depth of the tiled step is no more than 10mm each side then measure at the top of the window and order as INSIDE MOUNT (RECESS) this is possible because with a Roller Blind on the pin end side the fabric is set back from the end of the barrel by approx 12mm and the controller end the fabric is set back approx 25mm from the end of the barrel. The same would apply if it is a Vertical Blind, but all other blinds you must measure the narrowest width, so across the width on the tiles and order as INSIDE MOUNT (RECESS).

Q.) What size will the actual fabric be for a Roller Blind if my blind size is 182.0cm (Exact)?

A.) You lose 2.8cm of fabric from the width size given, this is necessary to allow for the controls and brackets.
So in this case the fabric width would be 179.2cm but the whole blind width would still be 182.0cm as long as you order (Exact).
If you order your blind as (Recess) then we deduct 1cm for the recess clearance and 2.8cm from the fabric width to allow for controls and brackets, so the fabric width would be 178.2cm and the blind overall finished width would be 181.0cm.
If you need a certain fabric width you would need to add the 2.8cm to your overall blind size in this case 182.0cm would have to change to184.8cm (Exact) to give your required fabric width of 182cm.
But remember you must have sufficient space to fit the blind as you would have increased the width by 2.8cm.
This would be useful if you are fitting a Roller Blind on a backdoor keeping the fabric behind the door handle when the blind is drawn down but still giving you glass coverage.

Q.) What areas do you cover?

A.) We can deliver to Scotland, Wales, England and the Isle of White, free of charge. We also deliver to the Channel Isles, Northern Ireland, Scottish Isles, Isle of Man and the Scilly Isles, but please note there may be an additional charge of £20 to these areas.

Q.) What colour is the lining on your Roman blinds.

A.) We use a white and ivory colour for our lining, white with white fabrics and the ivory as standard on all other fabrics, the same applies for the blackout lining option. Blackout romans are supplied on sidewinder controls only.

Q.) Can you make a blind if I provide the fabric?

A.) Sorry no we can not.
All of our fabrics have been tested and received the necessary treatment required to enable them to function correctly for their intended use, and are of the highest quality.

Q.) Not all of my vertical louvres are rotating to the closed position.

A.) Our vertical blinds are designed to realign, all you have to do is rotate them into the closed position with the beaded cord. When closed pull harder on the cord there will be resistance, don't worry it will make a clicking noise, continue until they are all in the closed position. This sometimes occurs if the louvre is catching on something. Click here for more information.

Q.)My vertical louvres are not all the same way round?

A.) Check to see if when you hung your louvres all the carriers in the headrail were in the same position i.e. in the open position, as you may have fitted some in a different position to the others, and that all the hems are the same way round, chains fitted correctly one length for each side. If this is not the case then try realigning them as described in the previous question. Click here for more information.

Q.) Can you supply a blind that is outside your maximum width?

A.) It may be possible you will need to email us with the dimensions, blind type and the fabric choice and we will try to help you.

Q.) Can I fit verticals in a square bay window?

A.) Yes, the best thing to do to ensure a good fit is order the largest blind first across the front of the window, when you have fitted this section following our installation guide allowing for handles ect.
You can then order the side blinds, butt the side blind up to the front blind, we would advise making the side blinds 20-25cm wider than the window if it is not within a recess. To cut down the angle view from behind the blind when in the closed position. If your track falls within a recess then deduct 1cm from your measurement and order as exact.

Q.) What is the best blind for our conservatory?

A.) The most popular choice is verticals as they offer the most versatility with roller blinds and venetian a close second. Pleated blinds offer a little extra with the aluminium backings which help to control the temperature of the room.

Q.) Can I fit a blind on my back door?

A.) Yes, the best option would be either a roller blind or venetian. Allow 2.5cm extra width each side of the glass to keep the roller width size down as it will restrict the opening of your door. A venetian blind will sit closer to the door and you only need an extra 1cm or so each side of the glass to give you privacy, self tap the fixings into the P.V.C. keep away from the glass seal.

Q.) Can you see through the blinds?

A.) No, all our fabrics will give total privacy with the exception of woven wood as they have an open weave.

Q.) What is the best blind for our patio door?

A.) The most practical blind for a patio door is a vertical, be sure to have the louvres bunched the opposite end to the opening door.

Q.) Which blind will offer the best privacy?

A.) Vertical and venetian blinds give the most versatile option, as you can tilt the horizontal slats if venetians or if verticals the slats can rotate vertically front to back to give either total privacy or obscure the view at an angle.

Q.)Are wooden venetian blinds good at keeping out the sunlight for a bedroom? Is it best to go for 25mm, 35mm or 50mm or are they all similar?

A.) The bigger the slat size the less light will shine through the blind i.e. less overlapping slats, so 50 mm slats will give the best effect for light block, with the slats tilted in the upwards position. As a guide approx 70% light block, what you could also do if you like the effect of Venetian Blinds but have concerns on the light issue, would be to mount a blackout Roller inside the window first then mount the Wooden Blind in front, it really depends on how much light you need blocked out. To do this you would need to allow 40mm for the roller bracket and either 46mm for 25mm & 35mm slat brackets or 66mm for the 50mm slat bracket. Plus your window handles if they stand proud of the window frame. So for a 50mm slat your window reveal would need to be 15.2cm in depth to fit both blinds with in the recess, allowing 40mm for handles! If your window is over 2mt check the bracket dimensions on the Roller Blind Info page for different bracket sizes dependant on the Roller Blind width.

Q.)Which is the best way to blackout our room?

A.) You can either use a blackout roller blind which will give you 80% blackout not total as there is a small amount of light seepage round the side and top of the blind. Or a roman blind with the blackout lining option gives the best coverage as there is little fabric loss with the manufacture of this blind.

Q.) What is the best blind to put in our kitchen / bathroom?

A.) The most common option is a roller blind but venetian and vertical blinds are popular too. But you will lose your window sill with the vertical blind.

Q.) What is the best fabric for my patio door?

A.) We recommend a vertical blind, all of our fabrics in our range would be suitable as they offer total privacy, reduce the glare, and create a shade to save your furniture from fade.
The only thing worth considering is if you select a white fabric it will create all the above but will still have a strong glow at the window on sunny days, which is fine dependant on what you are trying to do with your blind.

Q.) Do you sell vertical louvres only?

A.) We can supply them, you will need to email us the exact louvre length top to bottom.
Louvre size, fabric name and the quantity you require, so we can give you a price.
However this is not always the best option in the long run especially if your track is getting old, also the hangers will have to be compatible with the track.
Check out our prices for a whole new system. You will be surprised our products carry big discounts. The best option would be to have a new blind.

Q.) What colour is the lining on your Roman blinds ?

A.) We use a white and ivory colour for our lining, white with white fabrics and the ivory as standard on all other fabrics, the same applies for the blackout lining option. Blackout romans are supplied on sidewinder controls only.

Q.) What deductions do you make when manufacturing our blind?

A.) For Vertical blinds we deduct 10mm from the width and drop of your blind if you order as recess.
If you order as exact then the width will be your exact size provided but we will still deduct 10mm from the drop of the louvres this ensures that they hang free from the window sill or floor.
All other blinds drops will be the drop size you supply.
If you order your blind as exact then that is how your blind will be made, the exact size you provide (width and drop), with the exception of a vertical blind as explained above.
Please note with roller blinds we will deduct 1cm as above, but you also lose 1cm of fabric pin end and 2.5cm controller end to allow for the components fitting and operation. Click here for more information

Q.) Can I fit a Wooden Blind to my back door?

A.) Yes but you need to check the space behind your handle to the door to see if it will allow the blind to travel up and down, normally 25mm & 35mm slats will fit behind. Allow 4cm above the door where glass ends for the headrail when measuring and 2cm below where the glass ends, also 1cm to 1.5cm past the edge of the glass both sides check that the width you decide on will still allow the blind to travel up and down behind the handle.

Q.) Blackout fabric is it possible to have a white fabric on a Roller blind that cuts the light.

A.) Yes all of our Blackout fabrics have special backings made up of foil and rubberized coatings to give Thermal and Blackout properties, so yes you can have a white fabric that will cut exactly the same amount of light as a black coloured fabric would. It is the backing that cuts the light out, the backings are white in colour so we reverse roll the roller blind, so that the barrel is the same colour as the fabric within the room, and from out side the blind will be white.
