For the love of letters

May 2, 2017

Remember the last time you received a hand-written letter? You probably felt like framing it, because in a time of text messaging and social media updates the art of putting pen to paper feels like an act from a bygone era.

Maybe the fact that letter-writing seems outdated is the very thing that gives it such high value.

An old letter can provide a cherished link with a loved-one, or it could represent the perfect opportunity for some heartfelt emotion to be expressed in a depth that a spoken conversation, an email or a text cannot hope to reach. Continue reading For the love of letters

Boost home security with good blinds

April 8, 2016

High White gloss 50mm Wooden Venetian M2MBlindsThe retail adage that you need to let the punters see the goods rings true for a specific group of sinister ‘shoppers’.

We refer to burglars, a sad blight on modern living whose numbers seem to be on the increase, if the anecdotal evidence of people we know is anything to go by.

One factor that makes a home more tempting and more susceptible to break-ins is the ease with which valuables can be seen from the outside.

So it makes sense to not only add security features to your home but to hide items from evil eyes in the first place.

Why our customers won’t be falling for the sales sucker punch

January 19, 2016

Peoplebuying-15810_1920 will soon be swarming through stores in search of sales bargains, and many people shopping on-line will doubtless be looking for sales banners screaming out with never-to-be repeated offers.

We don’t enter into such fun and games because we know what you know – that to achieve spectacular savings of 10, 20 or even 30 per cent, retailers’ selling prices would have been artificially bumped up in the run-up to the sales promotions.

Our pricing strategy is simple and transparent. We offer the best possible price at all times.

Top tips on creating a great space to study

September 27, 2015

Alpaca peacock Vertical blindAt this time of year, there’s no getting round the fact that holidays are well behind us and it’s time to get down to some serious studying, whether you’re a student or a parent with children of school age at home – or whether you are one of the burgeoning army of people who work from home.
Workspace here can often be cramped and cluttered – particularly if it’s in a young person’s bedroom. Not exactly what you need to encourage them to get on with the difficult business of homework!

So here are our top tips on creating a great space to study.

M2M Blinds 50mm wooden Blind.Set the tone
Create a calm and pleasing space. Make sure your study area is quiet and fairly tidy. If the space is for you to be working at home you could find it stressful, so keep your study space as free from noise and distractions as possible.

It’s important to make your space tranquil. Decorate the walls in soothing, plain colours in your work area, such as sage greens and duck egg blues. These are cheerful without being too vibrant.

Timesaving tidiness
Make sure you clear the floor space. Clutter easily builds up in a workspace and can make it hard for you to find materials you need easily, which costs time.

Floor with a purpose
Laminate or wooden flooring is ideal in a study as you can more easily wheel a desk chair on it. This type of flooring also gives a contemporary, attractive feel to the space. It’s also a help if you find a dust-free environment, because this saves you from allergies and sneezing.

Choice of desk
Next, think about a good table or desk. Laptops on your knees can lead to aches and pains, no matter how young you are. A decent desk starts at just a few pounds, but if you’re a stylish, studying adult you can go to town – it all depends what you feel will make you work well (and what you can afford, of course!)

A place for everything and everything in its place — that’s the next most important thing. So make sure you have plenty of storage space.

Under-bed storage can be incredibly useful in this respect, with the help of some suitable boxes that you can pull in and out as required — you might want to consider boxes with wheels.

Equally important is shelving, particularly if you need to keep a lot of books in order. Again, sturdy shelving can be achieved on a tight budget, or you can splash out on a real style statement to complement your designer desk if required.

Make it easy for your eyes
Lighting is important in a study, particularly if it’s part of a larger room – a pool of light can help create a sense of privacy and promote concentration. Buy a good desk lamp to create a pool of light to work in.

By day, direct sunlight can be distracting, so invest in some good Made to measure Wooden or Vertical blinds that you can slant to control the amount of light flooding into your workspace. They can also look contemporary and chic.

So … you’re all ready to study. Of course, we can’t make you or your children actually get down to some work – but at least now you have no excuse!

Whatever else keeps you awake at night, make sure it’s not unwanted light

September 15, 2015

M2M roller blindsIt’s amazing the lengths some people have to go to in order to get a good night’s sleep.

We met a woman who was reduced to sleeping in a broom cupboard – yes, truly! – because it was the only way she could escape the night-time noise from outside her flat.

Other people’s methods of securing good sleeping conditions might not be quite as drastic, but they do mean taking unusual steps.

Some people wear earplugs, others use an eye mask, while others resort to sleeping in separate rooms to avoid their other half’s snoring.

Regrettably, we can’t do anything about your partner’s night-time snorts, but we had some interesting feedback on our TrustPilot page, from a customer who had a specific reason for ordering blackout blinds.

Dr Ian Gibson, from the United States, wrote about his experience, and his comments raise several interesting points.

Roller blog m2mHe says: ‘I had blackout blinds made to complement another set of blinds in my main bedroom, thereby getting rid of the need to wear an eye mask at night. They do the job well. I’m happy with the quality of the blind and I’m happy with the look of it.

‘I think the company gave me more material (i.e. more drop) than I asked for, which is great, because I can actually decide whether to drop it to window sill level or below for extra blackout.’

But it’s not just the product that left Dr Gibson so happy. We always stress the importance of correct measuring before ordering and we offer guides to show customers how to do this, something that Dr Gibson appreciated.

He says: ‘I took a long time working out measurements (measuring and double-checking etc) and it paid dividends, because this blind fits amazingly well. It also means I can do away with fussy curtains in the bedroom and have more of a sleek, contemporary look.’

And there was one final bonus that Dr Gibson appreciates, one that hadn’t previously occurred to him. He says: ‘It even freed up a corner from curtains so that I could display a shelf.

‘I also like the fact that the blinds came on a metallic support role. And I’m glad I went for the chrome pull cord. I went for a pattern on the blind, tpp, because I wanted to be more adventurous than I normally am, and I have to say, I really like the pattern and quality of material.’

We hope Dr Gibson’s comments are of help to you, and that you feel encouraged to explore our site and send for samples.

The wise sayings of Henry Ford and why we help you make a choice

August 29, 2015

Acacia-PillarboxApart from your friendly local Goth there aren’t too many people who subscribe to the Henry Ford school of thought when it comes to colour choice.

The American industrialist and founder of the Ford Motor Company famously said: ‘Any customer can have a car painted any colour that he wants so long as it is black.’

Thankfully manufacturers swiftly moved on from that dictatorial attitude, and all imaginable colours are now available. Car specs vary enormously even within the same model range. You might even think we’ve moved too far in the opposite direction, with too much choice.

Even buying a cup of coffee is no longer the simple process it once was, for example, and a bewildering range is set before you at Costa, Starbucks or whichever coffee empire is your favoured brand.

At Made To Measure Blinds we like to offer the greatest possible choice. Here is the big difference, though — we don’t want you to be frustrated by the immense range which might leave you wondering where to start.

Mustique-TealInstead we offer clear guidance on the type of blind that will best meet your needs and even the type of fabric or colour choice that matches your taste.

We’re always happy for you to pick our brains over the phone and we also provide clear guides that show you how to measure up before placing your order and then clear fitting instructions in written and video form.

If you’re shopping for blinds and need help to kick-start your browsing please start here, via this link to our Guide to Choosing Blinds for Windows and Doors

We’ll walk you through the process and narrow everything down, before taking you through our simple, six-step process to ordering here

• If money is your hope for independence you will never have it. The only real security that a man will have in this world is a reserve of knowledge, experience, and ability.

• My best friend is the one who brings out the best in me.

• If you think you can do a thing or think you can’t do a thing, you’re right.

• Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young.

• Quality means doing it right when no one is looking!

How to create a relaxing atmosphere in your beautiful bathroom

August 18, 2015

M2M Batroom rollersThere’s nothing more relaxing than a good soak in the bath or a long, hot shower – but only if your bathroom is a gorgeous and tranquil space that you can enjoy.

The bathroom is one of the hardest-working rooms in the house, and it’s easy for it to get a bit sad and cluttered. So when giving it a facelift, your first step should be to have a good clear-out (especially if you have a small space).

M2M Roman blinds bathroomTidy up
Invest in a good cabinet to hide all your bathroom products, and make an asset of clean towels by folding them neatly on a shelf or using a towel ladder like this one from Next.
If your bathroom is suffering from tired corners, smarten it up instantly by re-grouting tiles, renewing silicon sealant round the bath and polishing your taps.
New vinyl or a good waterproof laminate can also give a quick facelift to the floor; tiling is a bigger job and more expensive, but very long-lasting – Tile Mountain’s Skyros wall and floor tiles have an extremely cool and pretty retro vibe.

A good rug softens the room as well as providing comfort underfoot, but make sure it can stand up to all that water and steam – we’re very pleased with the Cool Stripes rugs from Modern Rugs, which would brighten up any bathroom and can be easily changed to freshen things up from time to time.

If your bathroom is small, dark colours may make it feel closed in. Choosing a light colour for the walls can also help bring a feeling of space and light, and mirrors – a natural for the bathroom, of course – can also help the room feel bigger.

The blinds factor

Natural light is at a premium with bathrooms – venetian blinds can be an ideal solution in a bathroom as they can be tilted to let in precious daylight while providing extra privacy for frosted glass. But Roman blinds look great, too. Choose wisely, using our advice (see below).

tilemountain_18169451008628193Time for a suite makeover?

Changing your bathroom suite can be pricey and is a big job, but there are some fabulous fittings around at the moment – take a look at the Round Fixed Head Cascade Shower from Justtapsplus; it’s slimline for a small space but provides a great water flow.

Barker & Stonehouse,Wooden chest with shutters, -ú219Accessorise

If you’ve less to spend, accessories make a big difference in the bathroom, and should be chosen with care.
You can go beachcombing to come up with some natural bits and pieces to give your room a nautical but nice theme, or shop around for natural finishes such as Sainsbury’s natural lotus clothes hamper.

We also like Barker and Stonehouse’s wooden chest with shutters – very cool and also useful in providing extra storage – and their display box, which looks like a row of huts, would fit in really well.

The final touch
After that, it’s easy – some nice candles, deliciously-scented bath oil and a good lock on the bathroom door. Ahh… relax!

Seaside style that’s shore to please!

July 22, 2015

HepburnDo you love storing up memories of special summer holidays – and do you strive to hang on to the enjoyment of long, sunny days by memorising the sights, smells and sounds of June, July and August?

One way of keeping those memories alive is by bringing certain elements into our homes. By bringing a touch of the seashore indoors we can keep those sunny days alive with reminders of fresh salty air and a seawashed colour palette of blues and pebble hues.

We’ve been checking out marine theme accessories to help us feel beside the seaside in our own living rooms.

Seaside_huts_blue 311 311 72 largeWood is a big consideration of course – think of all the lovely driftwood that washes up on the beach. Reclaimed wooden furniture is popular this year, and you can also give your room a stylishly distressed look with the help of clever colouring.

Sand your floors to a pale finish or paint them with pale colours – sand again afterwards and seal with floor varnish to get that worn look.

White Venetian blinds give a gorgeously Mediterranean tone to any room, and you can also slant them slightly to provide privacy and to give your room subtle lighting during the day.
Look out for blanket boxes and chests, which make great alternative coffee tables while providing extra storage.

And you can also go crafty with things you find along the shore. A simple mirror can be turned into a work of art by creating a frame of driftwood, or of polished glass pebbles from a spot of beachcombing.

You can get colour inspiration for your walls from beach pebbles, too – beiges, greys and creams – and echo them with a shelf of seaside finds such as shells and stones.

As it’s the seaside, there has to be a bit of blue, too – so go for striped cushions, rugs in strong geometric patterns to make those pale floors look even more lovely, and add a sky-blue throw to your sofa for snuggly comfort.

Ticking Blue 311 311 72 thumb jpegYou could also cluster glass bottles and vases together on a shelf as a reminder of glass fishing floats, or frame some of your favourite pictures of your summer holidays for the wall.

So who cares if autumn is just around the corner? Because this look is packed with pale woodwork, light blinds and bleached finishes, your room will seem full of light, and darker days will seem brighter – and you can go on being a beach baby for the rest of the year.
